FRENECTOMY
Ankyloglossia, or tongue tie, is a common affliction that can cause impaired breastfeeding and lifelong effects if not corrected in the first twelve weeks of life. Recent research shows that timely intervention improves breastmilk intake up to 155%, with continuing improvement in the post-operative period. Speech and orthodontic impediments later in life may also be mitigated, and more complicated future surgeries may well be avoided.
The office of Dr. Marissa Israel offers state-of-the-art ankyloglossia correction, conducted in an outpatient setting with CO2 laser technology. This procedure, termed a frenectomy, is quick, nearly painless, and features a rapid recovery time with minimal scarring or further discomfort. Dr. Israel is the only practitioner to offer laser ankyloglossia correction in San Francisco.
It is important to note that this procedure is only possible up to the age of three months, after which time the developing infant physiology becomes more inured to poor latch patterns resulting from ankyloglossia and its physical restrictions.
